Is outside quality emulsion paint REALLY any different from the indoor variety?

because I painted my shed five years ago with some leftover emulsion from my front room and despite being told it would all wash off in the rain it is perfectly ok....perhaps slightly faded.

normal emulsion is a water based paint where as a proper exterior paint such as smooth strong hold by crown has other additives in it which make it alot more hard wearing, so yes there is a difference in your outdoor paint than your indoor stuff. I am surprised that your shed has survived for 5 years with no rot as emulsion has no preservative in it which is what your shed needs give it a few more years and your shed will start to rot.Is outside quality emulsion paint REALLY any different from the indoor variety?
Interior paint is composed of vinyl polymers, exterior paint has acrylic polymers , uv resistant colors, and fungicides added, generally thicker even thicksotropic (jelly )

Its never a good idea to go for cheap paint, it takes too many coats, and works out dearer in the long run.
An interior paint wont necessarily peel used outside..but exterior has more polymers and acrylics in it..better pigments etc..and the uv rating is better for reflective values from the sun...fading will not be as drastic as interior over time ..but interior will adhere
mix your leftovers with 50/50 unibond and it will be waterproof and long lasting
If your shed is wood, and you painted it when it was very dry, the paint would be absorbed into the wood. This is probably why your shed still looks quite good. If you give it another coat once in a while it should last for ages.

What kind of paint should I use for an indoor mural?

I've been commissioned to do an indoor wall mural, and I've never painted one before. The mural is for a little girl's room, and the parents want me to paint: unicorns, a castle, ferries, etc. I'm going with a flat animated cartoon kind of look for everything, but I don't know what kind of paint to use nor do I know the best methods to paint it with.

I paint murals and use, as noted above- Acrylic paint.


The paint to get for your value is Winsor %26amp; Newton Galleria paint, comes in big plastic containers that look like crayola crayons, but it is WAY better than liquitex for longevity and so forth.


First tip- don't go to Michael's unless you HAVE to. Go to a local art shop near the local University or college that sells materials for much cheaper (usually 40% less than Michael's).

Be sure to get some retarder (to keep it from drying so fast on your brushes), and some good dish soap to clean your brushes. Also- get a roller if you are doing a big blue sky, or rolly hills- it really comes in handy when your back is about to break for painting fro 6 straight hours on some huge wall.What kind of paint should I use for an indoor mural?
Yeah, I'd say acrylic because that is what I've used at our community theatre when I work on their sets.You can get big jars of powdered paint at art supply stores. I'd check with Hobby Lobby and such first though.

POLYURETHANE WOULD MAKE THE STAIRS VERY SLIPPERY IF EITHER THE STAIRS OR YOUR SHOES GET WET. MY MOTHER BROKE HER ANKLE WHEN SHE FELL ON SOME OUTSIDE STAIRS THAT WERE POLYERETHANED.

You could paint them with floor paint, but wood stain would wear better.





Either way, I would also apply 2 coats of polyurethane afterward.
theres that self leveling paint but dont know if you could put it on steps maybe you can paint it on
See if the stairs are treated. If they are the paint won't last. You will need to prime it also.

Most places that custom mix paints do not allow returns due to dislike of color chosen. You can call them on the phone and ask what their policy is on returned paint.I bought indoor house paint to paint my room but now I do not want to paint it that color can I returned it?
More than likely, no. Did they mix it for you or did you buy it directly off the shelf? If they mixed it for you, you're probably out of luck. Most stores put a non-returnable sticker on top of the paint can if they mixed the paint for you (at least Home Depot does). If you bought it directly off the shelf, you should be able to. Call the store and see what they say.
As long as you haven't opened it, or used it, you can take it back and do what ever you want with it.

Benjamin Moore is one of the most popular brands. I USED to be easy to apply and had great coverage. somewhere along the line they changed the formula and now I can almost guarantee you will need a second coat.





I like Behr (Home Depot). Good quality, reasonable price. You may also need two coats but it will cost less. Behr also dries quickly and you can re-coat the same day. Also, check out the Ralph Lauren color chips. The HD guy can match anyone of them in Behr.

I haven't heard of the brands of paint that you listed (and I don't know your location), but I can tell you that one NOT to use is the Home Depot brand of paint. I think it's called Behr. We just painted our home a year and a half ago (we prepped it really well) and the paint is already starting to flake off. I'm really disappointed in the paint. The Sears brand of paint, however, I have used before and was really pleased with it. I think it's called Easy Living, and it was less expensive than the Home Depot brand. I have learned that the more expensive paint is not the best interior paint. If you find a color at a paint store that you really like, you can usually take the paint chip to another store and they can match the color with their paint. I've also heard that Dunn-Edwards is good, but I think it's a bit pricey.
